Who said the romantic period is over?

Yet another piece which originated from a discussion with an instrumentalist. This piece was designed to get me back into the writing for piano when a pianist asked if I might compose something for a recital next year. This is not the piece I intend to give for that purpose but served as a small exercise in piano writing.

Taking some influence from the Brahms Waltz in Ab, this piece works with both a more tradition waltz style and often near-contrapuntal writing with the exploration of borrowing harmony from related scales. In this case, the waltz in E major takes the B# which is often found in the harmonic version of the relative min scale. Although functionally a B# and acknowledging that a B# and a C natural can have slightly different pitch connotations in a justly intoned world, the piece often moves between the different enharmonic spellings in an attempt to best display the work on the page for ease of reading. Following the repeats, the piece does transition into the relative minor for a brief time before working its way back to the ending in a return to E major.

This is another piece that I will one day consider expanding and do not yet consider a finished product but am very satisfied with the results and sophistication of the writing, particularly of the main theme.

David and the Goliath that is Early Music

I have never especially had much to do with David Whyatt until this year but I have found myself increasingly engaging in conversation...
