Trombone and Vibes: The brass duo (sometimes both brass?) of the month

My time spent in ensembles has finally paid off (among many other benefits) this year in getting to know more and more people and becoming comfortable talking to them about writing pieces. This particular piece came about thanks t a discussion with Aaron Canny about the possibility of writing a piece for trombone. The process has not been a collaborative one but the ability to move outside of writing on a page and have prospective performers for my work is both exciting and an important step in moving forward with my composition.

This piece was heavily inspired by Xenakis’ Keren for Trombone solo which works with great change in dynamic throughout the trombone part. My intention is to work with dynamic interplay between the trombone and the vibraphone to create interest not so much through traditional means of melody and harmony but to work with dynamics and interplay between instruments instead. I hope to expand this work further to create a complete work for the pairing of instruments and organize some players to record it next semester.
