The first piece which was solely made for this assignment is the Piano Miniature No1. I wanted to create something that used a pedal point in a slightly less traditional sense. To achieve this, I have approached the idea of the detached pedal point to create something that while seeming like a pedal, is not constant. It is both unchanging throughout the majority of the piece but it is not always there. While this may be playing a little fast and loose with the idea of pedal point, the whole idea of expanding horizons encourages working outside the box in order to accomplish new ideas and concepts within a piece of music.
I think this piece functions well as it’s own miniature unlike many of the piece I write which always feel unfashioned like they need to go on for hours in order to truly reach a sense of completion.
I am fascinated by this idea and how I might be able to rationalize that and achieve or deliberately not achieve this in future. Many structures exist like period and question/answer when writing to create a form which feels complete but the always remains an intangibility to the work that we write as to why it feels complete or completely unfinished.
