I don't really hate Steve Reich...

I think after having a go, although I do truly enjoy the music of Steve Reich, in comp workshop, it is only fair that I try and create a work inspired by the droning repetitive indeterminacy that he creates (there I go again). This piece, inspired somewhat by the music of Steve Reich and Anne Muller, aims to incorporate repetition, indeterminacy and the use of improvisation in creating a work which can flow, ever changing (almost) Forever.

The percussionists of the work have a rather boring droning job playing chords in tandem which create a structural base for the pitch set which the other instrumentalists may play. This work is intended for a mixed ensemble of no particular size although I feel an ensemble too large will quickly become muddled and it is probably best played somewhere around a pierrot.

The notation is an adaptation of that which I am using to create the piece for Izzy on traverso, it allows both some structured technical descriptions but ultimately allows freedom for the performer to move as they wish. The idea of a closed circle is to create indeterminacy and no sense of time for the performer. Given an open or a finite circle, performers may feel the need to slow though each phrase and passage. While some may continue to do so, I would hope that they rather opt to vary the speed in which they navigate the circle spending longer on some rounds than others.

David and the Goliath that is Early Music

I have never especially had much to do with David Whyatt until this year but I have found myself increasingly engaging in conversation...
